An Albanese Labor Government will deliver funding support to ensure the future of the Diwali Festival in Cairns for the next three years.
Diwali is a festival of lights that is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists and is a significant occasion for the Bhutanese community.
Labor candidate for Leichhardt Elida Faith said the Cairns Bhutanese Community Inc will receive $24,000 towards its annual festival if an Albanese Labor Government is elected.
“We have such a vibrant, active and supportive Bhutanese community here in Cairns and the Far North,” Ms Faith said.
“I am thrilled to have secured funding to ensure we continue to see the popular Diwali festival here in Cairns for the whole community to experience and enjoy.”
In Cairns to announce Labor’s support for the festival today, Shadow Minister for Northern Australia, Queensland Senator Murray Watt said Labor’s funding commitment acknowledges the value of the local Bhutanese culture in the Far North community.
“Cairns is a truly multicultural society and Labor is proud to do its bit in supporting the local community in sharing and celebrating its diversity,” said Senator Watt.
Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles MP said Labor is committed to listening and responding to the concerns of multicultural Australia.
“Investments like this are a chance to showcase our local communities and multiculturalism as one of Australia’s greatest achievements.”
