Victorian Liberals' Education Statement an Insult to Students

January 24, 2018

MEDIA RELEASE

The Victorian Liberal Party’s so-called ‘school education values statement’ isn’t a policy but an insult to Victorian students and their families.

Schools policy is critically important. We must ensure both that every child gets every chance to realise their potential and that we as a society are ready to meet the challenges of the future.

Victorian students and their families are entitled to consider an actual schools policy from the alternative government, not a bizarre and incoherent rant.

An actual policy would come with actual funding commitments. This is particularly important given the Federal Liberals’ $17 billion cuts to schools funding – placing at risk the performance of Victorian students, who have been out-performing the rest of the nation, as PISA results have demonstrated.

An actual policy would have regard to evidence, and would be looking at the real challenges facing Victorian students to equip them to meet the challenges of the knowledge-based economy of the 21st century.

Matthew Guy and his education spokesperson deserve a fail for this effort. They need to try again.
