An Albanese Labor Government will commit $7.5 million to fund the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to complete its National Anti-Racism Framework and implement a comprehensive national anti-racism strategy.
Scott Morrison and the Liberal Government have failed to respond to rising incidents of racism.
They’ve failed to commit to funding the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to finalise or implement its National Anti-Racism Framework – instead starving the AHRC of funding so that it can no longer afford to fulfil its statutory functions, which include dealing with complaints of racial discrimination under the Racial Discrimination Act.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a deeply concerning increase in instances of racism.
Asian-Australians have often borne the brunt of racist abuse and attacks, with reporting of Islamophobic and anti-Semitic incidences also increasing at an alarming rate.
Labor joins the Australian Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International, FECCA and countless other peak bodies and associations in acknowledging that a national anti-racism strategy is sorely needed.
An Albanese Labor Government will deliver an anti-racism strategy where the Morrison Government has failed to act.
Quotes Attributable to Mark Dreyfus, Shadow Attorney General:
“Any government truly committed to Australia’s continued success as a multicultural nation must also be committed to tackling racism.
“Australia is home to people who can proudly claim ancestry with our oldest continuous cultures, and people who identify with more than 270 cultures who have come to this land and greatly enriched us all.
“We must do more to protect our great multicultural nation from those who would seek to cause division and conflict.”
Quotes Attributable to Andrew Giles, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs:
“With racism on the rise, it’s more important than ever we have a government that is committed to standing against it.
“An Albanese Labor Government will deliver on an anti-racism strategy where the Morrison Government has failed to act, to ensure no matter where you are from, no Australian is left behind.”
