LABOR TO FUND DIAMOND CREEK TRAIL MISSING LINK
A Shorten Labor Government will deliver $4 million in funding to complete the Diamond Creek Trail.
The project is Nillumbik Shire Council’s highest infrastructure priority, and has been pursued for over 20 years.
It has strong community support, with more than a dozen community and sports groups throwing their weight behind council’s push to fund the trail.
Labor has listened to and worked with the trail blazers - the local community leaders.
Labor will provide the funds to complete the project which would see a 55km unbroken trail running from the Yarra Ranges to the Melbourne CBD.
The funding will allow construction that will complete the missing link in the trail, connecting the townships of Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge.
Once completed, the trail will be used by 360,000 walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse riders per year.
It’s expected to bring in more than $30 million in economic benefits over 30 years.
The construction of the trail also provides opportunity for commuters to switch to an active mode of transport, resulting in further health and social outcomes including reduced congestion, vehicle operating costs, noise and air pollution.
It’s expected the project will create the equivalent of more than 30 full time jobs.
Labor’s investments in local community facilities like this support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.
Funding for this project also demonstrates Labor’s commitment to improving the social amenity of our fast growing outer suburbs
We can invest in local projects like the Diamond Creek Trail because Labor has made the tough budget decisions to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, close tax loopholes used by the top end of town, and we won’t give the big banks a tax cut.
