New Book Throws Down the Gauntlet on our Divided Cities

March 02, 2015

City Limits, released today, co-authored by the Grattan Institute’sPaul Donegan, and Jane-Frances Kelly, is a clarion call to action to tackle the increasingly divided nature of our cities.

City Limits explores the acute pressures people in our cities face on a daily basis. Like getting to work while juggling family commitments, such as getting the kids to school on time.

As people live further away from where they work, the rise of drive-in, drive-out communities presents issues that policy makers must grapple with.

City Limits is a challenge to all levels of government, but especially the Commonwealth, to have robust policies in place to make our cities liveable, sustainable and more productive.

Despite the Abbott Liberal Government being too desperate, divided and distracted to have policies for our cities, Labor is up to this challenge.

Labor continues to engage stakeholders, experts and community members about cities policy through the Urban Policy Dialogue and Caucus Committee for Cities.

Labor has already released a ten-point action plan for better, more prosperous cities aimed at lifting productivity, sustainability and liveability of urban Australia.

A critical part of Labor’s agenda in Government will be to promote jobs growth closer to where people live and to invest in better public transport so Australians can spend less time stuck in traffic commuting to work and more time at home with their families.

City Limits is required reading for anyone serious about our cities, and the four in five Australians who live in them.
